Hello again, everyone! Sal here from Sal’s Tavern, and in this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to turn your PlayStation 2 into a media player. Thanks to the Free McBoot exploit and the SMS media player homebrew application, you can easily play DivX videos and MP3 music files directly from your PS2. No need for extra players or devices!

What You’ll Need:
- PlayStation 2 – Of course, you’ll need a PS2 to start with.
- Free McBoot Memory Card – This is the key to unlocking homebrew capabilities on your PS2.
- USB Stick – Used to store the SMS media player files and your media (MP3s, DivX files).
- SMS Media Player – A homebrew application that allows you to play video and audio files on your PS2.
Step-by-Step Tutorial:
1. Setting Up the Free McBoot Memory Card
If you haven’t already set up Free McBoot on your PS2, check out my previous tutorial on creating a bootable memory card. The Free McBoot exploit loads custom homebrew applications, allowing you to run various media and games off your PS2. Once set up, you can move on to playing media files.
2. Preparing the USB Stick
You’ll need to place the uLaunchELF and SMS Media Player files on a USB stick. The uLaunchELF program allows the PS2 to load files from external sources, and SMS (Simple Media System) is the application we’ll use to play the media.
3. Booting the PS2 with Free McBoot
After preparing your memory card and USB stick, insert them into your PlayStation 2 and power it on. If everything is set up correctly, you should see the Free McBoot menu pop up. From there, you can use the controller to select uLaunchELF, which will open a file browser on your PS2.
4. Launching SMS Media Player
Once inside uLaunchELF, you can browse to the SMS Media Player files on your USB stick. I recommend using version 2.9 of SMS for the best compatibility with DivX and MP3 files.
After launching SMS, you’ll be greeted with the media player’s interface. From here, you can navigate through your files and select either an MP3 file or a DivX video.
5. Playing DivX Videos and MP3s
For the video, I’m using an episode of The Office in DivX format. You’ll see a list of files on your USB stick, and when you select the video, it will start playing on your PS2.
For audio, I have an Iron Maiden MP3 song, "The Number of the Beast," saved in a folder on the USB stick. When you select the MP3 file, SMS will start playing the song.
The SMS media player even lets you adjust settings like brightness for video playback and pause or resume your music whenever you want. You can also play your media without worrying about needing a separate device, turning your PS2 into a powerful multimedia center!
6. Enjoying Your Media
With your PS2 set up and Free McBoot installed, you can enjoy all your downloaded DivX videos and MP3s directly on your PlayStation 2. It’s a fantastic way to reuse your PS2 for more than just gaming.
Conclusion
By following this tutorial, you’ve now transformed your PlayStation 2 into a full-fledged media player. All you need is a Free McBoot memory card, the SMS media player homebrew, and a USB stick. No more hunting for external devices to play videos or music — your PS2 can do it all!
You can download SMS Media Player and the required files through the links in the video description. Happy viewing, and enjoy the convenience of having your media library right on your PS2!

I took the time to record myself getting my Playstation 2 to play DIVX files and MP3s. Check out the video below for all the details. Before you start working on your own playstation 2s, remember that this (Dvix and mp3 playback) is only possible with the Memory Card Exploit.
If you have a memory card that’s been EXPLOITED, the watch the video and download the following ELF file to your USB stick. Download SIMPLE MEDIA SYSTEM (SMS) here: http://home.casema.nl/eugene_plotnikov/
